XML Console's main window serves as a console from which you can invoke menu or toolbar commands on a project's contents. There are five columns that display information about the files and/or directories listed in the window:
To resize adjacent columns, point the mouse at the column separator (vertical line) until a double-headed arrow cursor appears, and then drag left or right. To change the column order, point the mouse at the column header of the column you want to move, then drag left or right.
When you select a listed item, the Status bar at the bottom of the window indicates whether the item is a schema, instance document, or directory and gives its pathname. The Status bar also indicates on the right whether Refresh mode is in effect and, if so, how many minutes until the next refresh.
When you right-click on a directory icon, a menu pops up with options to Validate or Convert. All files in the directory will either be validated or converted, depending on your choice. Right-clicking on an instance document will pop up a menu with options to Validate or Edit. Right-clicking on a schema file will pop up a menu with options to Validate, Convert, produce SchemaDOC, or Edit.
You can also edit a schema or instance document by double-clicking on it.
You can select a single item or multiple items for certain operations. With the Shift key depressed, select a range of items (including files and/or directories) by clicking the first and last item in the range. With the Ctrl key depressed, you can select multiple files and/or directories individually; however, clicking on the name of the file will not work. Ctrl-click will work fine on any other part of the listing--validity icon, file type, validation date, or path. Type Ctrl-A to select all files and directories.
With a single schema file selected, the Validate, Convert, Report, SchemaDOC, and Edit operations are all available from the File Operations toolbar. (NOTE: Report will return a report on all validated files, not just the selected ones). With a single directory selected, the Validate, Convert, and Report operations can be applied.
With multiple schema files selected, the Validate, Convert, Report, and Edit operations are available. With multiple directories selected, the Validate, Convert, and Report operations can be applied.
Certain management functions are also available for single or multiple item selections, depending on the item's Type. For instance, the Delete button is enabled for items (file or directory) that you've added to a project. However, this button is disabled for items contained by a directory added to a project. For batch processing, therefore, it may be more efficient to work with directories than with individual schema files.
